The eagerness to believe that the mind is extremely simple is a tell that they don't treat cognition seriously. Even LLMs have complex, multidimensional representations of something like concepts, so why would you expect that the mind is so simple? >

I think the answer is simply that it's motivated reasoning. Assuming that cognition is so simple makes it easy for AGI proponents to make claims that they're on the path.
