Why do people sample too few options before choosing? In our task, participants tried to buy smartphones at the best price – but this bias could lead to suboptimal decisions in areas beyond shopping, such as hiring or even police lineups.
This happens even when it's optimal to keep searching, meaning people might settle for a worse choice than necessary!
Rather than being lazy or impulsive, people genuinely expect the next options won't be much better—even when they are!
From online shopping to policing to dating apps, understanding decision biases can help design better interfaces & policies—helping people make better choices without them even realising it.
