Malta tops nearly every list of trans safer countries. With great legal protections that seem to improve every year. Malta is also a good option for families with trans children as childhood trans rights are also excellent. Could be a good option for Arabic speakers due to similarities to Maltese.

Portugal is the most affordable European country on our list. With a temperate climate it can be a great opportunity for remote and skilled workers. Blue collar jobs are harder to find.

Canada, our only North American country on this list, is good for French and English speakers with relative ease of migration for citizens of Commonwealth countries. Outside the Commonwealth it can be difficult to migrate to without refugee status or a skilled worker visa.

Sweden, like many countries in Europe is quite expensive to move to. Long dark winters and a very homogenous white population makes this less than optimal for people of the global majority. Still, the laws on the books are quite good as of this posting.

We include the UK grudgingly as the laws currently on the books in terms of protections are decent, the trends we see in the political life there however do not look good in the future as it lives up to it’s nickname of TERF Island. Medical access in particular is heavily attacked as of posting.

Bolivia is one of the most affordable countries on this list. With a slightly elevated risk of physical harm, the laws on the books are good. Work is not readily available for migrants so best for remote workers. With a large indigenous population, people of the settler class should tread lightly.

As someone already living in Portugal I can a few things- it might be hard to find traditional “blue collar” jobs but they have a thriving tourism industry so service jobs are plentiful and they mostly use English in the tourism area. They also have a special visa called “expression of interest”…

The expression of interest path to legal residency ended in June 2024. We live in Portugal, too, and that was the path my son's partner was pursuing, but the government ended it. However, I have heard it will be reintroduced in the legislative session this year.

They also vastly increased the income threshold for the D8 visa but it looks like the D7 is reasonably affordable still.

Agreed. But it is ultimately still a part of the UK and thus still at risk of the laws changing with the rising tide of transphobia there per our general statement on the UK.

I live here and I fully agree but there are still important distinctions such as changing your name and gender markers through deed poll and living and working under ‘known as’ names. And nhs Scot never caved and provides surgical gender care to under 25’s
