My guess is that we wont get Smash 6 this console generation, but we might get a Switch 2 upgrade with some new characters and maybe a new game mode.

We spent so much time speculating how Mario Kart would follow up MK8DX, with its Nintendo crossover content and massive list of racetracks. Speculated so much on whether they'd go all in on the "Nintendo Kart" angle.

Instead, Mario Kart World found a different, yet still appealing, premise.

Makes me wonder: What could Smash 6 do? Seriously, WHAT COULD it do that we haven't considered yet? Because so much of the community has fixated on third party crossovers and Internet-breaking reveals that they've overlooked other ways the series could iterate on the 2D plat fighter formula?

my first thought is to look to other platform fighters and even regular platformers and traditional fighters, much like how Mario Kart has clearly been looking to other racing games

Like, Mario Kart 7's addition of the glider has some clear Sonic & All-Stars Racing transformed influence that World seems to be iterating on, and MK8's zero-gravity has some F-Zero influence

Notably Mario Kart World's new approach is also something that might not have been feasible on previous consoles (as is DK Bananza's destructible terrain mechanic). Maybe a new direction for Smash might be along similar lines

Honestly, it doesn't need to innovate (except to have better online). It just needs to keep being good.

expand on single player(like a mix of melee's adventure mode levels & ultimate's trailers in cutscenes/travel to levels like wol) as it doesn't need to shove 1st/3rd party characters till it overflows as really to me the gameplay hit it's peak now focus on other parts.
