Earlier this year, Margarítis Schinás, EU commissioner, alongside Denmark, said it was “negotiable” to declare areas in Syria “safe for return” while it was still under the yoke of Assad’s regime, where Syrians who were deported by Lebanese authorities forcibly disappeared in May.

Despite the fact that the European Court of Justice made a firm statement about the safety in Syria at the time, the prime minister of the Dutch government, Dick Schoof, said his coalition thought about it differently and was also considering for the forcible return of Syrian refugees.

I could go on, list down a whole list of dehumanizing and malicious statements or plans that European politicians spoke about, while the traumatic experiences of Syrians were repeatedly told or written about, but this shows that Europe needs a hard, tough, look in the mirror.

On a yearly basis, there are rememberance days, stories told at memorials, about the horror and the atrocities that have happened in Europe. We shall never forget. But maybe, the uncomfortable truth is, that we have already forgotten.

We say that we are coming to terms with the mistakes made in the past. We offer our apologies towards those that were enslaved, tortured, or killed by European colonialism and fascism. Yet, what does this say when you read what I described above?
