Any suggestions for a good matt varnish that is brushed on (not sprayed) and actually dries matt? Doing a new Mordheim warband atm and Humbrol acrylic is drying with a horrid sheen, exactly the same as Vallejo and Revell do. TBH I suspect they are all the same thing anyway just in different bottles. - ThreadSky

AK Ultra Matte can be brushed on. Though I only tend to do that for small areas, locking down decals etc.

The Vallejo matt varnish in the little bottles is not totally matt for some reason.

I use Vallejo Mecha Matt Varnish 27.702, the stuff that comes in the larger bottles. Mine is usually airbrushed, but it comes out completely matt for me even if brushed.

Normally I slather everything in lovely glossy Vallejo or Humbrol gloss so this whole flat/matt varnish is unknown territory for me as I love shiny shit. Sometimes I suspect I was around a lot of women with very shiny shoes when I was a babe in arms.

I just stick with the Humbrol or Revell gloss, and brush-paint on this matt varnish from Daler & Rowney. I use the matt varnish sparingly, just enough for the glossiness to go. DM me if helpful 👍
