Indeed, all behaviours do communicate something. Sometimes it's because disrupting lessons is fun and a culture of disruption has developed. It's not always that deep. In other cases, it might be a SEND issue in which case schools need both the understanding and resources to support this. /1

The difficulty for inclusion for some autistic/ADHD children goes much further than teacher standards. I think much of the problem is structural - there is insufficient flexibility. The problem lies in creating such a system at scale.

I love Margaret Reynolds' comment, "behaviour is a child's first language!"
Since I work with ponies it is vital to teach that behaviour is a language, and punishing behaviour is punishing communication.

Nobody is sanctioning children for unmet needs, they're sanctioning children for behaviour which negatively impacts themselves and/or others. It is covered by Teachers' Standards 1 and 7.

Trust me there are schools & teachers that are doing exactly as I’ve described which for me is a breach of TS Part 2.
