China's is striving to be nearly self sufficient in agriculture and technology. With growing domestic demand and ever expanding global trade arrangements China may have no need for the U.S in the near future.
The world economy is meant to use the path of least resistance. Trump wants to put tariffs up to manipulate the flow of goods and services, they will go elsewhere.
The last time Trump did tariffs, U.S. farmers lost their soybean markets in China and ended up with Brazil replacing the USA as the top soybean exporter to China.
