Both my husband and I got the flu even though we were both vaccinated. But because of that vaccination, even though it was not a good match for this year's flu strain, our symptoms were less severe than they would have been otherwise.

If the federal government does not authorize a flu vaccine for this fall's coming flu epidemic, instead of at worst two or three days of a mild fever and fatigue millions of us could face symptoms requiring hospitalization. Many of us remember the flu pandemic of 1968 that killed 100,000 people.

This is just one of many recent actions by the Trump administration that directly threten our lives. Trump is also poised to block the development of a bird flu vaccine. It is freezing medical research grants worth billions. It has halted ebola prevention and AIDS treatment overseas.

Then there are the Medicaid cuts implicit in the budget deal Republicans pushed through the House this week—cuts that directly take away federal support for health care for low-income people in order to fund tax cuts for billionaires.

Let's also not forget the measles outbreak in Texas that this week took the life of a child. Kennedy, at a cabinet meeting, said the outbreak "is not unusual." But in 2000 measles was declared vanquished in the US because of a successful vaccination effort—an effort that Kennedy has helped unravel.
