Alcatraz Island has been a lighthouse, military fortification, notorious federal prison, and the site of a long occupation during Native American protests. Now it is a tourist attraction and part of Golden Gate Nat’l Recreation Area. It supports bird colonies of western gulls, cormorants, and egrets
