Employers squeezed already, especially the "restaurant" business — many would close down or cut hours/staff.... If we got rid of some of the artificial govt-imposed costs of doing business (min wage, overregulation), cost of living would also go down, and money would be worth something again.
I had a sandwich shop put an auto gratuity of 30%. I had already put a couple dollars in a tip jar. I literally was on the sidewalk ordering. It took a full 30 minutes to get my sandwiches on a very hot day. I believe in tipping, but let the customer write it in or tip cash.
I'll tell you, when they have 20, 22, and 25-percent suggestions, it does make me feel cheap only doing 20... but I do off grand total including tax (which is high in Cali), so they're never short shrifted by me anyway. what a mess
I can agree that many Employees should be paid a wage enough to not have to be tipped, but I've been on On the DoorDash/UberEats Driver Reddits to see what it's like and most of the time they don't get paid anything for the crap they have to go through to make a delivery. Take a look, it sucks.
Yeah, it's really messed up. I don't always order but when I do I feel obligated to pay them for their time. My friend who drives tells me he gets orders that are 3$ based pay but he would have to drive for like 20-30 min and they could refuse to tip all together.
It's sickening.
If you rely on tips to earn a decent living wage, it may be time to reconsider your position. This indicates that your employer does not value your contribution. A fair wage should reflect the skills and effort you bring to your job, rather than placing the burden of compensation on customers.
