But Prof has already complained about the set plenty, we all have, and the video sort of treats like a new problem. Designers have already acknowledged they leaned too heavily into tropes in 2024 sets, so why rehash it?

I absolutely agree here. while magic was never "classic medieval fantasy", it did have a cohesiveness to it, and at the very least, the stories had effort put into them and were not just silly trope sets.

I’m willing to be the aetherdrift defender; while there were some hat elements, I largely felt like the set and the lore worked without being completely discongruent. There’s some problems with like the factions being pretty diffuse, but I think that is a consequence of two things you don’t really

Address: the movement away from blocks and commander focused design requiring a large number of legendary creatures. The movement away from blocks pushes a lot of cards that could flesh out a plane outside of the set; we’re not getting dragonlords because they didn’t fit in dragonstorm

I think that's one of the biggest issues with set design right now. The new sets care more about commander than they do about standard. Commander was intended to be a fun place to play with pet cards that didnt have a home in eternal formats, it should never have been a focus of set building.

I think aetherdrift is the least egregious of the hat sets: does interesting things with established characters that don’t feel out of character, and doesn’t have the setting breaks that duskmorne had, or the “why are they doing this?” Of mkm or thunder junction.

I think the biggest strength is the diversity of visuals and aesthetics. It doesn’t force anything to look like something else, in fact Avishkar and Amonkhet look nearly identity to their previous iteration

Issue is Universes within are having UB in them like ghostbusters in Duskmourn, transformers in Brother war etc…. As you mentioned, it’s contributing to the lack of seriousness of the game and the fortnitification of it.

I agree with you much more than not. It is cool to see fans of Fallout, Warhammer, Marvel and other properties be excited about seeing things they love included in Magic, and I look forward to the same for fans of Avatar and Final Fantasies, but as a fan of Magic's own IP, it is disenhartening...

as a new magic player, I LOVE universes beyond and my favourite secret lair drops are city styles 1 & 2. Aetherdrift doesn't do anything for me lol. I'm a car enthusiast and they didn't pander to that in a way that interests me, and the characters being in that setting is meh.
