Taken from us on this day in 1995. Only 50. Far too young. Kenny Everett. The greatest pop DJ this country ever produced. Sacked at the height of his powers in 1970 by filing clerks and jobsworths who weren't worthy of cleaning his cuban heels.

Thanks for this, Ken's choice of music was often truly fab. I skipped to the end to listen to the Beatles interview and noticed that he's playing the mono version of "Pepper (Reprise)" with additional Paul vox!
For a brief period he played a scratchy unreleased acetate of Across The Universe on the radio. I'm still pretty certain it wasn't one of the released ones.
Kenny had immaculate pop tastes. I remember sharing an identical memory with a later R1 producer where we realised we often heard great new stuff first on Kenny's show rather than Peel's Top Gear. (Peel often used to end TG with "and listen to Kenny because Kenny knows", And he did.)
I'd like to think the two of them got along, the difference (in the show you linked to) between K's own choices and the obvious playlist songs is quite stark I think? I like his interviews with Lennon, his on-air zaniness is dialled right down as he must've realised how razor-sharp John's wit was?
Got through a large chunk of this and it’s wonderful. His stint at Capital in the mid 80’s is where I first heard him and as a household we loved it. As for that Rod Stewart sketch, man alive the talk at school the next day.
Would have been the 70th Birthday today of my dearest friend Bernard. We both loved Kenny. We used to tape his Saturday shows on a reel to reel recorder and play them over and over. I vividly recall a jingle he made for Abbey Road being released. He was a broadcasting genius...
