People who read a lot of history sometimes gravely intone that all civilizations eventually fail. The fall is inevitable.

But a sentient brain that is capable of making intelligent choices is the best tool the universe ever built for turning back entropy. In trillion-year time scales, it's futile. In human time scales, not so much.
We can choose better.
