Infections with Guinea worm Dracunculus medinensis have dropped from 3.5 million cases worldwide in the 1980s to 14 reported cases worldwide in 2023. There's no vaccine, this disease has very nearly been eradicated through public health measures.
Absolutely! The carter foundation got involved in 1986 and was instrumental. Jimmy Carter brokered the longest humanitarian ceasefire in history in Sudan in 1995, for 6 months aid workers could travel freely to educate health workers and distribute supplies.
The amount of human ingenuity that went into you reading this single reply (design and manufacturing of your device, maintaining the infrastructure of the internet, the power grid that charges your battery, the radio towers that broadcast data) is enough for a dozen lifetimes of study
Whenever my kids are bored I ask them where they think came from and what the story is of how it came to be in our house, and that snags them right quick
Waking up to the light peeking through the window — the sun barely up — and staying there in the comfort and silence feel soo good. Brightens up the beginning of my day!
We have for probably close to two decades been regular customers at a sushi place. Pre-2020 we would always sit at the sushi bar and got to the owner and his staff. When he would go to Japan he came back and always gave us a container of his town’s black miso.
Being able to come here multiple times a year is definitely a blessing I don’t take for granted. Looking forward to lots of gazing out at the water & up at the sky.
I hope it's magnificent, and that flowers fall out of the sky onto whatever table you're enjoying, and that life is rich and varied and wonderful while you're there.
Watching a bird floof itself up very nicely, so it looked like it was practically wearing a down parka (which I guess it kind of is!), in the first autumn drizzle of the season; looking content and unperturbed at the weather.
When I recovered from a surgery many years ago, my mother gifted me a custom made emerald ring bc she thinks it's my lucky stone and it would keep me healthy. I don't believe in lucky stones but I'm always wearing it.
It's just cold enough out now that I can start regularly wearing my thick, comfy Carhartt jacket when I'm out and my fuzzy fleece bathrobe around the house
the main principle of my work is that the problem is in me. No matter what happened, I could have prevented it or I would take note so that it would not happen again.
My wife ordered an Armagnac as last item before we left and he closed us out and then delivered them at the same time and like… fml they are a piece of perfection.
Our was very much a “French chefs assume they can mastery the food of the colonized zones” according to my wife, but it was still the best beignet I’d ever had in my life (“French chefs assume they know the cooking of others” is a bit of a thing
There’s a French bakery down here that does them and I’m sure they’re even better in New Orleans, but I gotta tell you, the ones at the bakery are magnificent.
Plain: perfect.
Chocolate filled: bit too sweet and *perfect.*
Vanilla: *see chocolate.*
We expect 200-250 get out the vote callers for Dems on Sat. morning. It's intergenerational, many their 1st experience in political organizing. The staff and volunteer leadership genuinely care and support volunteers to do something challenging--help people make a plan to vote and talk to undecided.
It smells like fall outside (damp earth and crispy leaves) and it’s been cool enough where people have fireplaces going. Going outside and smelling faint smoke and fall air is just ultimate surge of cozy.
It makes me incredibly happy and that? That is pretty fucking magnificent, if I do say so.
Most of the elements that make up you came from our star when it first exploded before reforming to a more stable state.
Parts of you are from other distant stars that drifted into our solar system.
The hydrogen and helium came from "the big bang".
You are literally made of stardust.
It is definitely a magical experience. There's a couple at my uni, and especially the ones which are surrounded by old stone buildings, it almost feels like going back in time.
Last Wednesday, I had a late start from school, so I got to the farmer's market and picked up three pomegranates. I rationed them all week but thought about them constantly.
Yesterday, my job sent me home way early. I got like... six or seven. (Ate two yesterday.) It is the MOMENT.
Our season down here is so long, we get them way longer than anyone else, but even here where they can fruit all year there is a moment they disappear.
This thread. Last night I joined bluesky. I woke up at 4am and can't get back to sleep. I opened the app. I found your post. Now I'm cosy and eepy in my comfy bed and happy to have read so many wonderful comments from so many appreciative people. Yes to you all. And cats.
Something I thought of for a while now. Tried put to words.
Joy and beauty is something unique to everyone. It is best for everyone to find it and share it with everyone else. That is what joy and beauty are best for. To give something for yourself and others. To share your beauties.
Thanks. It's weird how randomly those things can come out. And funny thing is I use those thoughts in some goddamn fics and they may come out just out of writing those. Sounds dumb. I know.
But nature of beauty is interesting to Explore for me. Because to all of us it is somewhere else.
I have more books in my apartment than probably most indie bookstores. And I can likely tell you exactly how I acquired each one. Get to travel to thousands places & different times just by opening a page.
Used bookstores are a source of joy unmatched by any big chain and I will sacrifice my entire being to ensure they stay open (locally and within reason)
No matter what happens, what the day is like for you, there will always be someone or something who will greet you at your door with a “hi” or respond when you need them. There’s always that animal or friend who will be there. And I think that’s neat. Just remember to be there for them too. - 🌸
All life on earth gets it's energy from the sun. 1st the plants consume the solar energy they collect, then the animals eat the plants then other animals eat those animals.
Have fun playing game with your friend today will be one of happy memories in the future.
(Due to lots of game today always online and server shut down xD)
There's a tiny solid state memory microchip on a spaceship headed to orbit a moon of Jupiter to look for signs of life, and stored on that microchip, along with hundreds of verified names from sincere fans of spaceflight is a greeting from 'Oliver Klozoff' just because I could.
In a few hundred years, I fully expect an Armada of Europa-moonians to arrive and besiege Earth, announcing "Citizens of Earth. Do not resist. We are here to take Oliver Klozoff!"
That was my before-bed snack this evening: Swiss Miss dark chocolate milk with cinnamon added, paired with warmed up brownie bites topped with extra creamy Cool Whip.
My hubby loves/likes & posts everything I do even though I have no audience. He's literally my biggest fan. It's just a little thing he does every day but he makes me so happy being so wonderful about it.
It brings me the silliest levels of joy lol
I am ok being a nobody, don't get me wrong.
But he goes out of his way to read & like my stuff sometimes and idk, it just makes everything a little easier. Just lost 150+ hours on YouTube for no reason but it doesn't matter in the long run. 🖤
the ombre of the leaves as autumn transition from beginning to end. green, yellow, amber, red, brown.
they say spring is the most colorful time of the year because of the flowers. but the leaves that give them the power to grow are the most colorful of them all.
I am in love with a man who is in love with me, and we love taking care of one another, and I never thought I'd get to experience this feeling of family.
I approached a young man sitting alone at the union meeting today, introduced myself, asked him what store he was from, & discovered his store had no steward!
i told him all about being a steward, that it was relentless, thankless, hard work. would he like to be one?
Dirt is really magnificent, if you go low enough you will find something made of water and stone, it's not quite water, nor stone but it's so beautiful. It's fascinating to read up on and yet I have forgotten it's name.

Not for as long, and not as intense - really just a glimpse of the high - but it’s like my body is getting something it missed.

He has sent through 3 recent photos, and I am reminded how lucky I am to have a friend who trusts me with things he doesn't often share with others.
The first sip of ice cold water when you’re thirsty.

I didn't do this math but it always makes me feel good to remember it.

I've made that my living because strangely, it's my most marketable skill, I'm really good at it and no one near me does it.
I have a lovely base of regular customers. 🙂

my friends and loved ones endured
and we are gifted another day
Just really feeling the benefits of living in a place for a while so you sort of know all the people.
Dogs are great
Cheese exists
TBH it's the only way I ever have it these days.

he said yes. I hooked him up 🩷
