Article 5 of NATO’s treaty states that an attack on one member is an attack on all. It was invoked on September 12, 2001, after the terrorist attacks on the U.S. 2/7
NATO allies stepped up in multiple ways:
• Operation Eagle Assist: NATO AWACS aircraft patrolled U.S. skies for the first time in history.
• Operation Active Endeavour: NATO naval forces patrolled the Mediterranean to prevent terrorist movements. 3/7
Troops from NATO countries, including the UK, Canada, Germany, France, and others, joined the U.S. in Afghanistan under the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). 4/7

Allies stood with the U.S. when it was attacked. That’s what NATO is about. Those questioning its value should remember who had America’s back when it mattered most. 7/7
