Looking back, a lot of the stuff I liked about Gaiman's stuff wasn't particular to him, but things he'd cribbed from other writers, like Jonathan Carroll and Peter S. Beagle.

And Angela Carter, Gene Wolfe, and John Crowley too. The sort of literate, quirky, weird fantasy that was not remotely in vogue in the '80s or '90s, he made it commercial by combining it w/pop goth culture.
Definitely though I remember spotting Matthew the Raven & the idea of Death as a pretty girl as direct swipes from Beagle's A Fine And Private Place & "Come Lady Death" immediately. And Gaiman's copped to both.
