Although many cairns have been built on similar peaks the stone pillars found on Wild Boar Fell are of a completely different scale. Image courtesy of Peer Lawther (2012)
I had done a spot of light googling but couldn't find anything about them.
Don't know if it's because they are on the coast-to-coast, or jtheit prominence in the wider landscape, but I'd heard of nine standards rigg well before I walked there.
The Wild Boar Fell cairns came as a complete surprise
The fell and the area around were sort of semi-industrial in the past and there is the military connection, so whether it started with any of those I don't know.
Yorkshire? I believe this is in what was Westmorland. My 2nd great grandmother was born across the valley at Hell Ghyll Farm, just on the Westmorland side of the ghyll which formed the boundary.

The only similar thing I've seen is the nearby Nine Standards Rigg.
Are there any theories about them?
