INV commitment is scary but needed in rare cases. My sis has bipolar 1 with anosognosia. For 25+ yrs we tried to help her. We can’t. She became violent and attempted to kill our parents and threatened to murder me. She and we can’t live a stable life because she can’t be involuntarily committed.

I am completely against 99% of cases of involuntary commitment but in rare cases it is the answer. When my sis is forced to stay on medication and stay on a regular eating and sleeping schedule (and away from street drugs) she becomes herself again.

There is a line, and it is always going to be hard to set, but people with recurring interactions with police (see the Vancouver attack driver) need to have a place that isn't out hurting themselves and others. Even a very high bar is still lower than it takes for commitment now.

Jail isn't the answer, and Regan caused this by cutting funding to non-jail alternatives. But tents on the sidewalk and yelling profanities at everyone who walks by all day can't be the right answer either. Tax the billionaires and provide proper (involuntary if needed) care.
