I've lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for over 18 months now, and it still never ceases to amaze me how little research is done on this section of the country.

And look, I know it's less common since we only have one (fairly small) PhD-granting institution up here But we even have a dearth of USGS and EPA data.
