Ruru are always watching! Usually there’s a wee fantail not far away giving hints of where they are lurking in the trees. Great photo.

I usually find them via blackbirds by I’ve seen a few mobs that included just about every small and medium bird species in the area 😆

There is a puna on Mauao very lose to the start of the base track (clockwise). You can stand on the track & watch birds drinking & bathing in a little pooling area (maybe manmade). I step off the track to get closer. Within a 5 mins I saw piwakawaka, bullfinch, tui, starling, tauhou, AND blackbirds.

The little watering hole I have a trail camera on is so popular I’ll be cleaning it out, turn around and a tūī, hihi or toutouwai will be waiting for me to leave. The fantails don’t even wait, they just dive right in in front of me😄.

I miss ruru. My sister is taking me glow worm 'hunting' at Otari at Christmas. Reckon we'll hear a ruru or two while creeping about.
I've never seen one.

I saw one completely by accident at Otari! Just looked to my left while walking and made direct eye contact with one 😅. They seem to like lurking under the fronds of tree ferns.
