The Historians' Creed: "Things can pretty much always get worse – and they have."

"Many things are bad now" is not equivalent to "things can't get much much worse." This is a fallacy many people fall into by mistake or because it's convenient. But it can really lead you astray. Things can pretty much always get worse.

This is quite similar to my Husband's Creed that I occasionally tell my wife: "There's no situation you can get yourself into, no matter how dire, that I can't find a way to make worse."
