Which is also a Chinese company, so how long until this new precedent hits the gaming sphere in a big way? How long until they force Tencent to sell to an American company?
That is the big question, yes. There have been divestment proceedings before, but usually in court, with ample public hearings and require evidentiary presentation. Now the law allows for immediate banning for secret reasons cause cause the gov't says so.
Not ByteDance per se, but League of Legends dev, Riot Gamse, is now owned by Tencent, a Chinese company, and this ruling opens the government up to ban games, too.
Tencent has stake in a bunch of other games too. Epic games (Fortnite and marvel rivals), Larian studios, Roblox and a few more I can’t remember off the top of my head. This is not gonna be good if they choose to go after more Chinese companies
That’s it! I couldn’t remember which other major company they had stake in. It’s not gonna be a great time if they start going after these companies. Lots of Americans will lose their hobbies
But if we have a lot of free time, we'll have time to go after them. So it's kinda' stupid. They should be bending over backwards to keep us distracted.
teh belerus company moved it to that sneaky place in cyprus to get round sanctions
it has about 90 people in west play the airplane game and thousands play the tank game
I was thinking it was an L for Marvel that they didn’t get a bunch of free press off this. The fact that I’ve been following stories about the ban on Washington Post for weeks and not a single article mentioned Marvel Snap is crazy.
Other major games with Chinese owners: Genshin Impact, ZZZ, Honkai Star Rail, anything hoyoverse basically. Then there's Infinity Nikki, Wuthering Waves.... I'm pretty confident that almost every single gatcha game is owned by a Chinese company.
I'm confused are you implying that there are covert backdoor kernel level access boot trojans, placed inside any and all video games or software products coming out of China?
No, that's what the american government is declaring. The ban doesn't just affect tiktok, it also affects other things, for example, an editing app called capcut
Even more specifically, the bill that allows the government to "ban" corps. Can force any foreign company to have to be bought by a US company or face a ban.

It's a very bad precedent.
