I don't think the changes a lot of those 80s and onwards American anime dubs did were needed for the shows to get popular and my reason for thinking that is well, the rest of the globe didn't have to do that. Heck some 60s American dubs of foreign stuff kept things pretty straight and did well - ThreadSky

They're more representative of the USA's particularly skittish and prohibitive view of what qualifies as kid friendly media, it's often painted as a matter of "oh Japan is wacky and crazy thinking this is kid appropriate" when it's more like, the rest of the entire planet

A lot of it is the insularity of the Anglosphere especially the USA. The rest of the non-anglo world is used to consuming foreign media be it American, East Asian, Mexican, Thai etc. but for the longest time in order for non-english media to be big in the US it had to be heavily modified
