Katsuji Matsumoto (松本かつぢ) has a good claim to be the first shoujo manga artist, along with one of the era's most famous illustrators. He helped lead the surge of popularity of Shoujo no Tomo in the mid-1930s, and would have outsized impact on Japanese popular culture in the mid-20th century.
