Plot twist: it's so expensive that nobody will use it.
Unfortunately, the lack of immediate availability, the price-to-scale factor, and of course the lack of infrastructure (new materials need new manufacturing machines and processes) often throttle these brilliant ideas almost instantly.
This is Japan, so they find away. This is like solar & wind technology. If we don't invest or continue to innovate, it will always be expensive. The Oil companies have been fighting cleaner energy & anything they deemed a threat for decades. Go Japan!

Japan is “socially poor” country who reinvest almost everything into infrastructure.
That’s why if they severe ties with America, it wouldn’t hurt them at all, they’re a manufacturer, not a “service” nation like America.
Japan has products to boost US economy, if corporate greed allowed.
