I don't know what the solution to this is but the NFL has to find a way to better encourage teams to develop quarterbacks. Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield are proof QB talent takes time to develop. I've said this a million times. To me, it's on the teams: Don't freaking play rookie QBs. For every C.J. Stroud, there are 6 or 7 biffs. Teams literally are eating their young.

It’s not entirely on the teams though bc the rookie contract rules incentivize playing young QBs. They’re just doing what makes the most sense within the rules. Prior to the rookie wage scale it didn’t happen nearly as often.

First thing that comes to mind with little thought of how this would work: Make rookie contracts longer. Maybe encourages teams to hang onto them longer since they control them cheaper for longer?

Yeah, position specific rookie contracts would solve a lot of issues. Give QBs more money and longer deals to encourage development. Give RBs slightly more money so teams stop trying to exploit cheap rookie RBs rather than paying veterans. That would definitely help.

Agreed. No easy structural change, tho i do think...

Now that players can get paid serious $ in college, I think more will stay longer in college. Think Nix, Penix older prospects may become more accepted.

Yeah that should help. Though the extra covid year really pushed those guys over the top.
