Put your original artwork in a sealed envelope and post it to yourself. The envelope will be post dated. Don't open it. It's proof that it was yours from that date.

BTW, in this particular case, the dispute isn't over who created the original article. Rather, it's over the scammers alleging that the OP sold them the copyright to the works.

I agree, it is folk wisdom with no practical application because if I am not mistaken some copyrights can be applied retroactively (depending on country and with limitations), however if you preemptively apply for the copyright you don't have these limitations.
