Very odd from Google. I'm in the UK and Google Maps has one name (ours) for the English Channel, despite other countries all calling it something different. And yet the Gulf of Mexico has the name given to it by a foreign president in brackets. Why? - ThreadSky

I think I read somewhere they display only the local name if you are in that country - but show alternative names as well if you are located in other countries.

Yes maybe we need someone not in France or the UK to help validate this theory, with the Channel example. Looks like if you’re in the US its just Gulf of Trump but both if outside.

The equivalent is probably the Sea of Japan and it's labelled Sea of Japan (East Sea) for me.
