"Good food, things to do, and nice places in walking distance with a short walk/bike/transit commute" is a very pleasant life, and it's hard to convey that to people who haven't had it.

Without crossing a street, I can access a major grocery store, 3 banks, about 10 fast food restaurants, 3 full service restaurants, and several other services. If I cross one street, there's even more. This way of life is the greatest

Ever tried a bike? Even more freedom without a car. It’s amazing how far you can go in 15 mins with a bike — as long as they didn’t build the city on hills …

I moved downtown, and I walk to groceries, church, the library, the park. I only get on a train or bike to go to school, my doctor, or rare errands. As a person with chronic fatigue, it's great not to spend so much time travelling. Also I'm a grad student and a car would be my rent over again.
