I think when the FF series severely slowed down with 12 and 13's production issues, the whole industry got this impression that turn-based gameplay was a relic of project constraints and not a deliberate design decision with a host of advantages over the action-RPG format that's so common now

Stupid teenage me avoided a lot of good stuff way back when because I listened to reviews like X-Play as gospel.
It took a decade and TBFP to undo the damage reviewers like Sessler did.

I'm saying is Slaughterhouse (360) was jank, but that good jank that was pretty hype and that needs to come back.

My two favorite turn based games recently mostly star casts that are 30+. It's not that I don't like any games where you play as a band of teenagers, but it's definitely a barrier for me with a lot of JRPGs.

I’d say they lost some popularity on consoles during the 7th gen, but were HUGELY active and popular on handhelds during the same time period. But that genre has been back in vogue longer than it was gone at this point

I don’t know if that’s really the whole story because I don’t remember that many JRPG series or developers that tried to appeal to the west in a dedicated way. Nier having a dedicated old man for the western audience maybe? Resonance of Fate giving everyone guns? I’m drawing a blank otherwise

Like I know what you’re describing with Japanese devs in general but I’m struggling to think of major JRPG devs either trying to make RPGs or even entire new series that appeal to the west. The only one I can think of Is Binary Domain

There was a lot of bias against JRPGs from game reviews in magazines like Gamepro, Electronic Gaming Monthly, etc. back in the day. Persona 3 marked the start of a turnaround on that front, but for a long time (even including the PS2 era), reviews were half-assed by journalists with no interest.

There are people who simply want that type of game but with "them real graphics"
And FFX was the one of the last times that happened because the PS2's graphical capabilities cause vaguely anime stylized things to come off as "pass" as realism

I always felt like we saw a flood of jrpgs getting ported to the eest after Final Fantasy's continued success at the time, along with a few breakout titles getting alot of attention, but many of them couldn't reach the same audience numbers and/or were quite niche.

So knowing what people can be like, some people probably decided that every jrpg not reaching FF level sales, somehow meant there was an opposition to the genre, rather than it just not being as easy to sell as sports/racing/fps titles that have a wider audience.

a lot of people just dont realize
they want a turn based RPG with the "feel" of final fantasy.

Mainly this boils down to i think insanely high levels of presentation.

As you said in your other posts RPGs have been doing well these past few years regardless.
