Who designs the art? Can you commission an artist and then bring that to the tattoo artist? Or is that disrespectful of the tattoo artist? If you're not bringing in art, do you just describe to the artist what you want? I know these are pretty rudimentary questions. 😁 - ThreadSky

yes, you can commission art to take to a tattoo artist (id get permission from the artist or explain when getting it commissioned that its for a tattoo), or you can go to a tattoo artist you like either with some reference images or describe what you want and they can put a design together

I've personally done all three. Your best bet though, is to look through various tattoo artists portfolios, find one who works in styles you like, and talk to them about it, as individual tattoo artists may have their own policies

Thank you! I very well might. This whole thing grew out of wanting to do reminder tattoos now that Kristie is finished with radiation, i.e., images and text that remind us to be present with each other and enjoy all that we share.

Once you have a solid idea of what you want (style and subject) find artist portfolios (real, finished tattoos are not comparable to digital tattoo “previews”; be sure to see completed work) that are similar, and then schedule a consultation with the artist to discuss/make appt and drop deposit.

I recommend having a general idea of the size and location also, but a good artist will provide input on size and placement, so try to remain flexible. Every artist is different, so your best bet overall is to look at the finish product to decide if you trust their judgement.

Avoid “I can do that for you cheaper” like the plague. You will get what you pay for, and quality art is expensive. Also, tipping when you’re happy with the work is always advisable (but not required, just please don’t tiny tip because it bums them out).

No percentage (that I know of). It’s honestly up to you and how satisfied you are overall w/ the experience. Like “what could artist get for x amount as a thank you for the x amount of time/effort they put in”. 20 could get lunch; 100 a nice dinner for two etc. If you’re happy, pass it on 🖤

Generally the larger/more complicated a tattoo, the more time, the bigger the tip, but it’s not mandatory and if someone makes you feel bad about it or like you have to, they’re being rude. That’s not how tipping works.

I have tattoos that are flash (the pictures on display at a tattoo shop), tattoos that the artist drew based on me telling them what I wanted, tattoos where I brought in the art I wanted and the artist adapted it into a tattoo, and all have been fine. If you're commissioning the art separately...

I have a couple of pieces that I didn't commission specifically but got permission from the artist before approaching a tattoo artist as well.
