There is a lot of 'ifs' here. Climate change is a real threat, but catastrophisation does not help the cause. Once something is predicted with a 'if this' and 'likely that', we are hostages to fortune. And if something does not happen, it is a gift to the deniers.

But this is how science informs us. There are "ifs," and there are probabilities. Denialism is confidence without "ifs" and without doubts. Is it a catastrophization when an oncologist tells a patient with a cancer diagnosis what their chances of survival are if certain conditions are met?

We know that Climate change could well have catastrophic results, but if we state that something will happen more or less imminently , and it does not, people then lose confidence in the science. 20 years ago we were told the Arctic would have gone, that low lying cities would be underwater .

I don't hear climate scientists saying that dramatic sea levels will occur imminently. I hear them say, "if we stay on this trajectory, global sea level rise is unavoidable". Also, mass extinction, etc. is clearly a catastrophic event but it does not occur overnight. Public has to be educated.

No, the doctor is informing the patient of a diagnosis, but if that Doctor continually tells people they have cancer, which it transpires they do not, it undermines confidence in that Doctors diagnoses.
