I wasn't aware there was so much disagreement over the Mane 6's ages. I always assumed they were in their 20s, but a lot of people on Twitter thought that they're teenagers.

Let's see if we can settle how old these ponies are.

Right off the bat, it's not possible to say definitively. The Mane 6 never have their ages canonically established, so we have to rely on external sources and inferences.

From the show itself: the Mane 6 have jobs, live independently, and own property, all fairly strong adult signifiers.

What complicates things is this tweet from Faust, which many have interpreted to mean the the Mane 6 are around 15 years old. That's not exactly what she's saying: she's working on horse-year logic.

But, when people try to argue the Mane 6 are teenagers, this is what comes up.

But in another tweet, Faust states Rarity is an adult, meaning she's at least 18, before clarifying she sees them being on par with people in their 20s.

So, now we have a contradiction. We're not going to solve this easily with the Word of Faust.

So, what does the show have to say?

An interesting detail I noticed in the Cutie Mark Chronicles is that Cheerilee was a foal at the same time as the Mane 6. Rarity was even in her class.

So, however old you think Cheerilee is, Rarity is the same age.

If we want to withdraw some external context: to be a teacher in the United States, you have to be at least 18. Though even the youngest teachers are usually in their 20s, because they normally have to have graduated college first.

And that's assuming Cheerilee just started.

Also, keep in mind: Cheerilee was a teenager during the pony equivalent of the 80s. Which means the Mane 6 also grew up during this period.

Pony time periods don't really work the same as ours do, but as far as implied time goes, the 80s were a while ago in the 2010s.

It's "more effective clickbait!" then it would be normally.

Juxtaposition. People buy it. It's the same playbook tabloids have used for over a century.
