We have a lot of Samoans here in new zealand. They do NOT whistle at night as they believe it attracts ghosts. Unless I was being pranked, it's actually illegal in Samoa to do so.

I figured it was because it's just a really good way of announcing to any bad-guys within 500m that you're walking alone at night. People generally talk when there's more than one, and whistle when there's nobody to talk to.
