Also, for the left, there are lots of people amenable to left wing solutions to public transport onanism (and crime, generally), but if your position is "Actually, it's not really that bad", people will just vote for the party that proposes right wing solutions.

i think Mary Harrington was right when she wrote about "normophobia"; opposing rules and norms about what is good for society out of a) imagined concern for hypothetical edge cases and b) an ideological pre disposition against rules and norms. this is just a particularly mental edge case
