On the 80s, sncf adopted a booking system, inspired from "sabre", I think, a system for flights. Unions tried to scare the population/!users stating that it would be disastrous and prices would be based on market forces rather than the old cost based system.
It was delivered late, there were glitches but eventually worked fine. I think the minitel stuff meshed well with it. They used a contractor to configure sabre etc.
Now i have tried to book some trains a couple of times in the last couple of years, I think with https://inoui.fr, but ended up renting a car.
I don't know what inouï.fr does wrong. Perhaps it is too open to non sncf services such as buses etc. Renting a car is cheaper often as soon as you have more than one passenger

It is not great, I agree.
2 bookings and with return ticket puzzle. A true adventure.
What's your example, please?
I do know we used to to enrol for a Les Glenans sailing camp...
