Technically not the first Umineko reference in Sonic. I tried to name the protagonist of TMOSTH "Battler Umineko" and it didn't let me! It had similar responses for various detective characters in media

i feel the need to share this here. on tumblr someone sent me an ask about an umineko reference in idw sonic #75, which i'd missed. then evan and nathalie confirmed that it was actually TWO references: a character doing the crying battler face, and two bg extras colored like battler and beatrice
