This happened to me with my fic and my boyfriend was so confused. I spent 2 hours researching flowers, their meanings, and if they were toxic for throwaway lines about my character's favorite flower. IT WAS IMPORTANT TO ME, OK???
alt text: writers on our way to study a subject so niche for our books that's mentioned once in the entire story

I was writing a car journey taken from an airport, when I discovered through my research that it wasn't open to civilian flights at the time my novel was set. So, even though no one would ever know, the route suddenly became 3 times longer & we then pass the original airfield on the way!
I swear sometimes it doesn't even make it in the book technically, it just acts as the foundation for another thing which is awesome... but definitely guilty of that 💀
I have to do it with a new WIP I'm outlining/brainstorming, trying to do all this research on what a typical archaeologists and their routines when it doesn't really come into play much more than the introduction😆
that one little detail about the character that you mention on one bit of the story and never bring up again and only remember when you accidentally gave them the opposite of that detail

So much research into current space exploration and projects, nearby star systems, etc.
Sometimes I feel the research is half the fun
