Tennessee SG just said trans people "want a constitutional right to engage in non-conforming behavior" and that's really important because that argument wants to overturn the sex stereotyping precedents that ban laws from, say, requiring women to wear skirts.

Also, "non-conforming" to what, exactly? Because like how is that an argument against the fact that law discriminates on the basis of sex? The obvious answer is "to gender expectations based on sex assigned at birth."

doesn't conform to typical expectations for males, wouldn't just saying "males don't have to act/dress like that" be a more direct way to resolve dysphoria? If you act "feminine" and are MtF because of it, isn't that reaffirming rigid gender stereotypes? (2/2)

Well it'd be an easier way to resolve dysphoria... if it worked. Gender dysphoria is caused by an incongruence between one's internal sense of gender and one's physical attributes and presentation. You cannot simply will it away with saying you are non-conforming, you must break the incongruence.

And the physical attributes and presentation can actually be changed. Also, the concept of saying "well men can wear dresses and take estrogen" is just transition without you accepting me. Doesn't really make anything easier.

And no, trans women don't reinforce gender stereotypes any more than cis women. Plenty of cis women wear makeup, wear women's clothes, keep their hair long. Why would trans women being women and doing those things be any different?

Many of us have tried being "feminine men," it does not resolve dysphoria. We are not trans simply because we "are feminine." Trans is not the same as being gay or GNC. Dysphoria is related to our discomfort in our bodies and social role. It is a medical condition in the DSM and ICD.

This always seemed weird to me. If you don't care about gender expectations, that is, if you believe one's gender has no bearing on one's behavior or expression, there seems to be no remaining reason to declare oneself trans. If, for example, you are MtF because your gender expression (1/2)

I wonder if people remember that anything later described as 'crossdressing' used to be punishable. That’s how they legally killed Joan of Arc, by arguing she had crossed the line of sin 'trying to pass off as a man' when she went to war. Nobody should want to go back to that, and yet here we are.
