Isn't it curious that between Stephen Fry and Ian McKellen the one that has actually been an active LGBT rights advocate also supports trans people and the one who doesn't support trans people also has obvious disdain for queer culture in general.

And briefly met Sir Ian, opened a door at work and he was just standing there! Gave me a beaming smile and a “oh hello” ☺️ had to stop myself blurting out “Holy crap it’s Magneto” 🤣
He seems a lovely lovely man, getting autographs at work is kinda frowned upon, we get a lot of celebs and they like being treated as just a normal person for the most part when visiting
Remember the time Stephen Fry did a whole documentary about how it was okay for him to like Wagner, including interviews with Auschwitz survivors who like Wagner? I don't know anyone was questioning his love of Wagner beforehand but I sure as fuck was questioning it after that.
There comes a point when you mix in those circles in Britain, and I used to, when they basically test to see if you can be one of them. Being taken to a high place and shown the riches of the world, etc.
Interestingly, much is talked about re oxbridge as a training ground for this. I went to Cambridge, as did Fry. Oxford seems to be embrace its role as groomer for the establishment unironically, but there’s definitely a strand at Cambridge that tries to get you to realise it’s all front and bullshit
It won’t outright TELL you that, but it very much creates an environment in which you are encouraged to look at the man behind the curtain. Apparently it didn’t work with Fry
I'll listen to Gandalf instead of the Master of Laketown, thanks... Gandalf hangs out with Hobbits, Dwarves, Elves, Men, Ents, Eagles, Ishtari, Maiar, and the freakin' VALAR! Gandalf is cooler anyways.
He is a establishment tool used to fake opine as a voice of opposition.
But really just another celeb liberal on the pay roll.
He belongs with Lipman, Baddiel etc
I grew up watching him & still love a lot of his early work, but as a person he’s changed too much. From supporting JKR over trans people, to backing genocide, via mocking victims of CSA, saying women can’t enjoy sex, and being a royal sycophant, there’s just no redeeming him
I remember Christine burns once saying she once met fry (pre trans panic) & when tried to talk to him about trans rights he seemed totally disinterested.
i went to a one-man show he put on in a nearby small theatre where he told tales of his life and career (including getting an utterly mesmerised young fan from the audience to recreate his "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" scene with the original staff
at the end of the show he announced that all the...
proceeds incl ticket sales would go to the venue to help construct accessible disabled toilets. he then stood in the foyer rattling a bucket for old change, chatting & having pics with anyone who cared to stop. he'd done the same for the entire tour in small UK venues
Fry is just another gay man wanting to be respectable & not be associated with the “silly queers”. He needs to do that to be accepted & advance himself in certain social circles and will throw those at the bottom of the ladder under the bus in a heartbeat.
Ah man stephen fry is problematic? That really sucks, I really like his books on greek myths. I felt really supported when he pointed out herdaphroditus is a god of gender fluidity
Has been for a while. I was a huge fan, but I went off him with his increasing comments about biological essentialism, and particularly when he said women could never know the kind of sexual desire men do.
I think it’s that in Society, you don’t argue politics in case you alienate valuable contacts. So if someone starts saying “isn’t awful?”everyone nods along to avoid an argument, and it becomes ‘what everyone believes’. So spineless.
I got some pushback, years ago, when I started pointing out that Fry was showing reactionary tendencies. One of those times I absolutely hate bring right.
On one occasion, when I was working for Trans Media Watch, I called Stephen Fry out on a transphobic comment. His response was "We all need to learn to laugh at ourselves." He seemed oblivious to the fact that he's a textbook example of the internalised harm that kind of thing causes.

He enjoys the benefits of the queer liberation movement, but looks down those who fought for it.
The price is your morality and principles.
I walked away in disgust. Fry apparently didn’t.
I get the impression that the US is the same, except they don’t quite have society in the same sort of chokehold there.

he's very much the good guy!
