A fire at Kent Blaxill on the High Street was so intense it illuminated the night sky for miles around. Damage was mainly to the rear of the top floor and the roof and the stores.

A fire at Kent Blaxill on the High Street was so intense it illuminated the night sky for miles around. Damage was mainly to the rear of the top floor and the roof and the stores.

The showrooms were unaffected and the store was able to open later that day. The fire was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault. Damage was estimated at £2000 (c£116,000 today).
It was announced in May 2025 that the firm which had traded in #Colchester for 180 years, would be closing for good in July.
