I wasn't an OG player so I'm not sure on the timeline of different game modes, but these days they are mainly known for their Battle Royale mode! A year ago they launched a "multiverse" with several new permanent game modes that never took off & siphoned resources from BR. It's been rough lol
Also it feels like the game has more collab content than actual Fortnite-related content these days. It's just not the quality or spirit of game it used to be sadly :( There are very mixed & very strong opinions in the community but the fact that even big FN streamers stepped back this year = RIP
That was a really good summary thanks. I just sort of assumed what you mentioned is what people would want more of. But I guess that's my naivety to how fortnite works. I have my doubts they'll fix it though given epics track record.
Yeah exactly!! It makes sense that people want a game to be actually fun & engaging, and not just one big ad machine. Alienating their core player base seems like a bad business decision lol but Epic's gonna do what Epic's gonna do I guess
I feel this would be a test of true longevity on these F2P Games as a service model. Since fortnite still is the golden standard, with I believe the highest return. League may have more but I can't remember.
I also wonder if they'll pull a destiny, simply tease a sequel and say well fix it then
I tried understanding the lore of Fortnite once, and found it baffling lol. So now it’s just the silly shooting game where I kill a banana man while dressed as Ariana Grande, and I don’t think of it being any deeper
I remember people were complaining (as they do) about the zero war stuff but at least that had some semblance of plot, that tied back to the whole "Fortnite is a place between worlds" thing.
Now it's just oddly vague seasons crammed with advertising.
(personal bias, I don't mind an occasional Star Wars or Marvel theme, but I wish they'd focus more on their original characters. Expanding into stuff that's not really media like BMW cars and Nike shoes feels weird even if they could be slotted into the cosmetics framework.)
I understand it may have been iffy before but it's really gotten weird now.
And if you go back even further, it was a PVE survival game with an actual story, that happened to have a BR mode that got popular.
Also Epic seems to be relying heavily on community-generated games. I guess they want to be Roblox but they got popular with BR. While nothing's popular forever, trying to pivot in a lazy way doesn't help.
(Half the community seems to want the maps to be as "competitive" as possible, theming be gone. So they start out somewhat bold and then quickly walk back everything fun because it's too flashy or too buggy for competitive.)
all excellent points! i agree with your analysis. like if they wanted to add new game modes as a bonus or as LTMs, that's fine! and collabs, also fine & can be fun! but they've done all this at the expense of their core features & have alienated their core player base in the process. makes no sense
I use "lost the plot" colloquially here, but yes! There used to be actual lore & a dynamic storyline that drove each Fortnite season. But there was a regime change in the company & the new guys have completely decimated any sense of backstory & continuity & nothing makes sense anymore lol
I wish they would have like a seasonal guide that would get you up to speed on what happened. It seems like a lot of the lore gets background references but you'd have no idea what's being referenced if you weren't playing at the time.
(And even then the game isn't always forthcoming.)
Ahhhh I gotcha lol but damn that sucks they bailed on the whole having some sort of story narrative to drive a season. Which I can see how it can appeal to people.

I remember way back when, it was still a coop zombie horde shooter. So what would be the plot now?

Chapter 1 and early chapter 2 were the peak of the game
