The UK House of Lords was packed today with Tory peers as the Bill to abolish hereditary peerages is debated. They oppose change.
Never saw so many when poverty, homelessness debated
We need an elected second chamber, but it must not be a clone of the Commons or use First-Past-The-Post system.

Appointees chosen by ballot, as with jury service.
(No, I haven’t thought the practicalities through, just the principle).
1) no MP can take a seat with less than 51% of the available vote - a two round system? The first round counts to gather UK wide votes, too.
2) abolish Lords, replace with a cohort of 'elected reps' whose seats are assigned by proportion of the UK wide vote.

Sure, it's simplistic, but... it's a start.
I always say tinkering with the Lords such as removing hereditary peers is somewhat of a nibbling away at the the concept of monarchy, because that's hereditary.
Yes.
But my point was it's an eating away of the concept of Monarchy. Removing honours would have a similar effect.
No politicians, no campaigns, no exclusivity, no elitism, no 'old school tie', just ordinary people voting on issues that affect ordinary people.
There's a thought😉
Taxpayers already fund MPs 'second homes' and other luxuries. How much more would it cost us to keep this 'second chamber' in the manner to which they will undoubtedly soon become accustomed?
We need a complete ground-up overhaul of our political system IMHO.
(in other words, pick people completely at random, like jury service). It worked well for Athens, who liked it so much they called it democracy.

Hereditary peers and bishops should go first.
The monarchy needs sorting too.
But still no salaries... just the attendance allowances as now
Unelected House of Lords.
Unelected Members of Cabinet.
Private Company has its own MPs.
MPs, police and armed forces in England and Wales swear allegiance to the unelected head of state.
It's time we STARTED to have democracy in the UK??
