And no business which donates to a political party/individual can receive a government contact. Similarly, no individual who donates more than £x amount can be appointed to Upper House.

ABSOLUTELY. Other public servants have limits put on gifts they can receive.

Politicians, especially ministers, heads of regulatory bodies, and senior civil servants, should not accept donations or gifts.

I was once sent a bottle of wine by a supplier and had to decline it. Politicians should be setting the highest standards. Any gift compromises their integrity.

I remember back in the 80's County 'L.G.O.' appraisal sessions would include being told that on no account were we to encourage or accept gifts or favours of any kind as doing so could result in 'expectations of preference'
Of course at that pay grade this was subject to sanction and not optional

Modest, declared (£10 was the threshold), hospitality alongside meetings or speaking at conferences etc. is one thing, gifts quite another. The former is often part and parcel of Ministers meeting business, NGOs and other groups. The latter (gifts) should just be outlawed.

The so-called transparency just angers me even more. Apart from the numerous "Oops" moments when undeclared gifts surface, the whole thing just looks like Ministers saying "Yes, I've been bribed with sums you have to live on for a year, what are you going to do about it?"
