Probably because if people in many fields of employment started questioning whether their employment was coerced or not would come back with an unacceptable answer of yes it is coerced. They have state imposed obligations that coerce them into working this job they hate.

We actually do have a word for nonconsensual employment, it's called slavery. Most prisoners are slaves, and the Department of Corrections is the largest human trafficker on the planet. But people don't like to think of that as trafficking, they just want to think of poor little women being abused.

In my 20 years of experience there is a lot of overlap and grey area in the industry. I know that’s not convenient for attempting policy changes but we also have made zero progress with that in those 20 years so why not speak more to one another about the reality of the spectrum of sex work?
