This would hit harder if there weren't so many documentaries where the cops are like "we didn't think at all about interviewing the Blood Soaked Streaker guy running through the crime scenes. Instead we interviewed the black next door neighbor for 14hrs with no food or water."
If I were a detective working a grisly crime scene, the first person I'm interviewing who's not currently covered in blood and holding the murder weapon, is the "nice quiet guy that everyone loves and respects".
iirc there was a reality show where they had actual crime scene people help set up a crime for competing true crime podcasters to solve and the whole thing was a disaster because all the podcasters just performed so below expectations that it was just nonstop chiding them all for fucking up
Meanwhile, the real reason cops fail to investigate crimes properly is because they hate the victims (e.g. hundreds of thousands of "rape kits" that go untested, harassing women into recanting reporting of rape, deadnaming and misgendering of murdered Trans people, etc.).
Not so fun fact: Jack the ripper was believed to kill only prostitutes or the like, however now its believed they were just poor woman given that title just for being poor, so yes you are correct.
We have a stretch of road in Canada known as Highway of Tears because of the 40 plus women who have been killed or gone missing on that road. But because the majority are indigenous..the mystery continues.
We had to deal with human garbage like the Renegades motorcycle gang (hell's angels lapdogs) and the United Nations criminal gang (PG is where they started).
So horrendous. Thank you for your work on this. We have active serial killers of indigenous women and girls across our country that safely fly under the radar. I live in MB and I’m so glad our new premier is loud about tackling this issue.
I used to live there. I worked for a security company, we regularly talked with the Elizabeth Fry Society.
It's not 40, it's over 120, there were at least three serial killers. It is suspect that some murders were perpetrated by members of the Racist Corrupt Misogynistic Pricks (RCMP).
Thank you for correcting my number, I know it was WAY more than 40 but that is all that is listed when you google it and I didn’t want to present a number without facts. When I say “it’s still a mystery” I meant bc of lack of RCMP actions. I know communities have been working together.
I've got a true crime channel for anyone interested. Also new here to this app so happy for any accounts I should be following! https://youtu.be/6vvvwgwE7kY
A smoothdunk crime strip that doesn’t feature an appearance by Columbo? Gee Mrs Columbo wouldn’t like that at all, no sir. She loves an appearance by Columbo, even just a little Columbo in the corner, quietly waving, she really loves that sir.

Unfortunately it is.
Even in a podcast that covers warlords and dictators, genocides, there's some details that just sink in differently and left me going "what the fuck. What the fucking fuck?" And that was one of the ones that stuck in my brain
I know this is a joke but I've heard of cases where the cops were almost this dumb investigating a murder lol (usually in very small towns where they get like 1 murder every 30 years so they aren't used to dealing with them tbf)
I was shot once, and the cops were convinced the bullet was stuck in my leg even though I had an exit wound. All the meanwhile they were kicking the bullet around on the ground as they were walking lmao.
When you get the genius detective characters (Sherlock Holmes, Adrian Monk) I wonder if they make the other characters less intelligent so the detective can be the smart one picking up on these things?
With Monk, it was usually pretty clear that he just looked at the world differently. And that it was more of a hindrance to him in everyday life, & sometimes even as a detective. They sometimes had a foil playing dumb (like Disher early on), but they often gave more nuance. Been rewatching lately!
One thing I will say is that people often forget that, following actual procedure for investigating so your evidence is actually accepted into evidence takes a lot of time. Like sure it's easy to play detective, but not easy when you have to do administrative tasks of a detective.
Yeah. As a kid, I thought being a teacher was taking register and teaching stuff using a chalk board.
After being a real teacher for 20 years, I can confirm that most of it isn't anywhere near that much fun. So much of it is producing data to prove what you're doing to meet targets.😞
The best ones usually involve police corruption and the courts refuse to allow evidence to be tested for dna. Think West Memphis 3 but lower profile because it’s not HBO

Amazing how just changing the art style can enhance these smug punchlines that do not say much of anything.
Oh and the butler if in a fancy neighborhood.
Columbo (2024) (aka Columbo Jr. in the US) is a guy with a True Crime Podcast solving what the police could not.
He is no relation to the famous detective if the same name but took the moniker as his social media username.
Cops did bugger all to catch the Green River Killer who operated for decades because most of his victims were sex workers.

Goddammit, it’s so incredibly distinctive that even scrolling I can still tell it’s yours immediately.
Was this the fiendish plan all along?
You’ve burrowed right into our brains.
PROVE ME WRONG

—like 85% sure—it was that guy. You’re welcome, detective.”
For modern cases, ID channel/et al. always hides time frames for the investigation to obscure that this solved it within a week
The modern 'wear gloves' is 'shove your phone in a friend's bag'
