This hits hard, especially how many of my faculty have weaponized incompetence to get out of service…service that then falls to those of us who will do it competently.
A few years ago I read a productivity book written by a white male professor which recommended being like Feynman and refusing service by promising to be incompetent at it. Had it not been an audiobook I would have thrown it across the room.
These stories really make me appreciate my dept's approach to service -- you can express a preference, but total number of committee/service roles is counted up and divided equally by the chair
