This is a follow up to a paper we published earlier in 2024 where we noticed that the suite of known AMR determinants used in most bioinformatics software didn't explain the resistance we saw in our Peruvian data

Some of the discrepancy could be explained by the presence of "high-resistance" alleles of cmeB in the cmeABC efflux pump.

The role of this multidrug resistance efflux pump has previously been studied in C. jejuni and certain alleles of cmeB linked to increased resistance to fluoroquinolones and macrolides - the two most effective oral antibiotics for human campylobacteriosis.

In our collection, most isolates with the high-resistance alleles were from specific lineages and more often found in commercial chicken isolates

This project came about because ResFinder was not finding cmeB and cmeR in many Peruvian Campylobacter strains.
