I think nobody in Ukraine is happy or at least ok with it. For me it’s like choosing to whom we lose the war - russians, who would continue genocide or USA that thanks to Trump administration betrays us and wants to use us as much as possible
From what we know now, it doesn't really do anything. It's like opening a joint bank account and Ukraine saying "yeah sure, we'll put money in there later, after we win."
Having dealt with mineral rights issues in coal miner country in the US... those words cause me concern for very specific reasons most never had to deal with, but sometime you just have to do what you must do to survive.
Maybe I'm an absolute pessimist. According to the prevailing opinion of Western politicians, russia cannot lose and Ukraine cannot win. It seems that circumstances are developing in such a way that already insufficient support will decrease, and we will begin to suffer significant personnel losses
(usually the shortage of equipment/ammunition is compensated by personnel). Then, an agreement will have to be reached somehow; about half of the broken country may remain, which will be completely bankrupt after the agreement.
And in a few more years, russia will take the remnants of Ukraine one way or another. So, we can sign any financial obligations; in the end, no one will get anything. Well, we fought well for three years; who knew that democracy and all these principles are empty chatter?
I will especially laugh if trump accepts putin's proposal to extract resources from the captured territories of Ukraine. If I am not mobilized into the army by then.
Everything will be fine, maybe the descendants of emigrants and refugees will regain their independence in another 100 years, and they will do it better than us.
In any way death is better than occupation and death from torture in prison or in the russian army as meat.. As our folk art says: "Ой чи пан, чи пропав, Двічі не вмирати," I don't know how to translate it. 🙂
Fwiw western freakout is probably not in itself bad because if there's any chance it radicalises more people against Trump more then that's probably good
This is why I've been trying to share the Kyiv Independent article when talking to friends about this - it does the best at illustrating exactly what Ukraine accomplished here
I mean, it’s still a pretty unfair deal that they would not be proposing or agreeing to in normal circumstances, even if it’s still ultimately an acceptable sacrifice, unlike any territorial or military concessions
